Sabancı University's Zinc Recovery Project Receives EUREKA Support

The international project titled "Zinc Recovery from Industrial Acid Streams via Cavitation," to be conducted in partnership with BORÇELİK and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and featuring Dr. Morteza Ghorbani, a faculty member at Sabancı University's Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, has been awarded funding under the EUREKA Circular Value Chains call. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Çakmak Cebeci is a researcher in this project.

 

 

The project, which will commence on June 1, 2026 and conclude on June 1, 2029, will develop a modular, scalable, and low-energy hybrid reactor system for the on-site treatment and recovery of zinc-laden acidic waste from galvanizing and similar metal plating facilities.

Contributing to the Circular Economy

The system to be developed envisages increasing in-flow activation and mass transfer through hydrodynamic cavitation, providing selective ion transport with assisted liquid membrane technology, and achieving metal recovery through electrorecovery.

With this approach, it is planned to provide a circular solution that reduces sludge formation and provides reusable acid and recovered zinc, replacing conventional treatment processes based on neutralization and sedimentation.

The project, which is based on a waste-to-source transition, aims to contribute to reducing environmental impacts and operating costs.
